Since September 2016, the Indashyikirwa Agents for Change project funded by Care International has trained 420 men and women known as gender community activists in 14 sectors of 7 districts. Each sector has 30 trained gender activists. They take every opportunity to talk about gender equality and fight against Sexual and Gender Based Violence. Gender activists in these sectors have sensitized other committed men and women who spread gender equality and anti-GBV messages. Considering changing weather conditions in the 7 districts where the project is implemented, RWAMREC has equipped them with bags, umbrellas, raincoats and umbrellas. Every month, the gender activists meet with RWAMREC staff to share about the achievements and challenges.
The local leaders support the work of the gender activists and give them opportunity to spread gender equality messages during community meetings. The gender equality messages spread by Gender activists attract people near the road, in village pubs and other public places. People who internalize the message ask questions, express their opinions and sometimes challenge current practices and attitudes influenced by socio-cultural norms. The approach promotes critical thinking and mutual respect during the discussions and conflict settlement. Quite often, the gender activists meet people in the afternoon and sometimes very interesting activities end in the evening.
